NFC Championship
The greatest comeback in the NFC Championship Game between the Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks took place on January 18, 2015. The game, which became known as the "Fail Mary" or the "Miracle in Seattle," was a stunning display of resilience and late-game heroics by the Seahawks.
The game started off with the Packers dominating the Seahawks, building a 16-0 lead by halftime. The Packers’ defense was suffocating, and their offense led by quarterback Aaron Rodgers was in control. The Seahawks struggled to find any rhythm, and it seemed like the game was all but over for them.
However, in the second half, the Seahawks began mounting a comeback. Quarterback Russell Wilson led the charge, throwing a touchdown pass to tight end Luke Willson in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 16-7. But the Packers responded with a field goal to extend their lead to 19-7 with just over five minutes left in the game.
What happened next was truly remarkable. The Seahawks recovered an onside kick, giving them a chance to narrow the gap further. Wilson then orchestrated an 80-yard drive, capping it off with a touchdown pass to wide receiver Jermaine Kearse to make it 19-14 with just over two minutes remaining.
The Seahawks attempted another onside kick, and incredibly, they recovered it again. With just 1:25 left on the clock, Wilson took the field and, with a combination of timely passes and scrambles, moved the Seahawks closer to the end zone. On 4th-and-goal from the 1-yard line, Wilson’s pass was initially tipped by Packers cornerback Sam Shields, but it miraculously landed in the hands of Seahawks wide receiver Chris Matthews, tying the game at 19-19 with only 14 seconds remaining.
In overtime, the Seahawks won the coin toss and received the ball. They wasted no time, with Wilson connecting on a 35-yard pass to Kearse to set up a 1-yard touchdown run by running back Marshawn Lynch. The touchdown sealed the incredible comeback victory for the Seahawks, sending them to Super Bowl XLIX with a final score of 28-22.
This comeback in the NFC Championship Game will forever be remembered as one of the greatest in NFL history. The Seahawks’ ability to overcome a massive deficit in the final minutes, combined with their clutch plays and unwavering determination, is a testament to their resilience and the unpredictability of the game of football.
