¡Enhorabuena España! Las campeonas de la Copa Mundial Femenina de la FIFA 2023
They made it to the mountain’s peak, yet, this could just be the start. Spain emerged victorious over England with a score of 1-0, thanks to a brilliant 29th-minute goal by Olga Carmona, securing the country’s first Women’s World Cup. Tragically, she received the news of her father’s passing before the match commenced.

It’s an exceptional achievement for Spain, especially considering the federation’s lack of substantial investment in women’s football… suggesting even brighter future prospects.
The women’s league in Spain only turned professional in 2021, and as per reports, the Royal Spanish Football Federation allocated a mere 1% of its budget to women’s football as recently as 2014.
Spain made its World Cup debut in 2015 and had never advanced past the round of 16 until this year.
In September 2022, 15 players opted out of the national team due to various issues, including some concerning the coaching staff. Although there were some improvements, numerous top players still refused to participate.
This tension was visibly apparent in the aftermath of Spain’s victory, as players deliberately excluded coach Jorge Vilda from their celebrations. Vilda was jeered both before and after the game.
Even without the presence of two-time Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas, who suffered an ACL tear, Spain clinched the title. Sandra Herrera commented on how Aitana Bonmati, the Golden Ball recipient for the tournament’s best player, filled in for Putellas.
The Spanish women’s team currently holds the U-20 and U-17 World Cup titles, solidifying La Roja’s top spot in Sandra’s premature 2027 Women’s World Cup Power Rankings.
What to expect from this
Herrera: “The world champions demonstrated their prowess on the grandest stage. They overcame internal disputes and disagreements with their federation and coaching staff. Aitana Bonmati, Jenni Hermoso, and Salma Paralluelo, stars at different stages in their careers, united to create history at a pivotal moment.”
